On September 10th 2010, one of the founders of TFRD, Ms. Serena Wu, was awarded with the 2010 International Caring for Life Award--Wisdom Award given by the Dharma Drum Mountain Foundation. The award has been given in honoring individuals who, despite hardships in their lives, shows long-standing contributions on suicide prevention and spiritual counseling for the youth in the society. President Ma Yinig-jeou and Premier Wu Dun-yi also attended the ceremony.

Ms. Serena Wu, after her son nearly died of a rare disease, she learned the meaning of life in the teachings of Buddhism. She had a new understanding about life and death, which motivated her to make her move in helping more people suffering from rare diseases in Taiwan. Over the past decade since she established TFRD, she has been seeking the greater benefit for Taiwan’s rare disease patients. During her hard times, it was Master Sheng Yen’s teaching, “The four steps in dealing with any problem: face it, accept it, deal with it, let it go.” that supports her. Even though Ms. Wu’s son passed away five years ago, she is still fighting for the benefit for all patients, and actively participating and voicing for the disabled in relevant policy making committees, including the government’s orphan drug committee, disabled citizen’s welfare committee of Taipei City, the Enable League, and so on. With the honorable recognition, Ms. Serena Wu said she would like to share this glory with all patients and friends. TFRD shall strive for the best and keep fighting for the rights and interests of our patients.
