Plants Heal the Heart:Gardening Class

In 2020, TFRD launched its first caregiver support group - Gardening Class, which helps caregivers of families with rare diseases to refresh their tired bodies and minds through the healing power of gardening therapy. This year, we continued to invite Ms. Chang Qiao-hui, a horticultural therapist, to lead 22 caregivers to experience the horticultural group classes.

At the beginning of each class, the teacher introduced the solar term of the month. Coupled with the solar terms of living such as Chingming (Qingming Festival), Lixia (Beginning of Summer), Liqiu (Beginning of Autumn) and Bailu (White Dew), from March to October, participants learned about what herbs can be used to match each of the solar terms and how these herbs can be applied in their lives.

By spending time with plants, caregivers were relieved of the stress caused by long-term care, and were stimulated by the five senses of sight, smell, taste, touch and sound. The handmade items made in class can also be made again at home to spend more time to connect with plants. Participants got a short respite and find the meaning of their own lives. When sharing their handmade items with other participants, participants also received care and attention, making the support system of the group better. Reflecting on the journey of caring for their sick family members, the group found positive expectations and energy for the future.
