22nd Rare Disease Scholarship Award Ceremony

"Providing care for individuals with rare diseases is a matter of national priority—demonstrated through sustained and concrete actions. A nation's true progress is reflected in how it empowers its most vulnerable communities to live with dignity and a sense of inclusion."

This year's award ceremony was held on November 23rd at The Howard Plaza Hotel Taipei. President Lai Ching-te attended the ceremony to present the first "Rare Disease Contribution Award" and expressed the government's firm stance on caring for rare diseases.

In recognition of Mr. Chen Chun-han's lifelong advocacy for the rights of individuals with physical disabilities, TFRD has established the "Rare Disease Contribution Award." President Lai was invited to present the inaugural award in honor of Chen's enduring contributions. TFRD Chairman Tsai Fuu-jen praised Chen, a lawyer diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy in childhood, for his unwavering commitment to human rights. "Despite living with a rare disease, Chen demonstrated extraordinary talent and perseverance, supported every step of the way by his devoted family," Tsai said. "We are not only commemorating his spirit here, but also hoping to encourage more patients like Chun-han to courageously confront life's challenges."

Dr. Chen Yen-lin of Tri-Service General Hospital, a physician living with muscular dystrophy, was honored as the inaugural recipient of the "Rare Disease Contribution Award." Diagnosed during his high school years, Dr. Chen resolved to pursue medicine, dedicating his career to genetic testing research. He established a molecular pathology laboratory that supports hospitals nationwide in rare disease diagnostics, while pioneering actionable testing tools. His work has delivered tangible solutions for both himself and fellow patients, creating measurable social impact—a recognition befitting his extraordinary contributions.

The Taiwan Foundation for Rare Disorders (TFRD) extended its heartfelt appreciation to President Lai for attending the ceremony despite his demanding schedule. The event also welcomed a number of esteemed guests, including Legislators Wang Cheng-hsu and Lin Yue-chin; Minister Chiu Tai-yuan of the Ministry of Health and Welfare; Deputy Director General Wei Hsi-lun of the National Health Promotion Administration; Taipei City Councilor Lin Chen-yu; Director Yang Yu-hsin of the Keelung City Department of Social Affairs; and Olympic badminton gold medalist Mr. Lee Yang. Their presence served to witness the important moment for the 367 outstanding students with rare diseases. TFRD hopes that each student continues to bring out the best in themselves.
