RD Students Awarded Presidential Education Prize
The Presidential Education Prize Award Ceremony was held on August 20 at the Yuan-Shan Hotel Taipei. The organizers of the 2021 Presidential Education Prize chose 408 students from among the nation's top students who possess the spirit of striving for advancement and bring their expertise to full play. These 56 winners emerged from these 408 students.
Among them, we are pleased to see that seven patients of TFRD were awarded this honor: Tu (granulomatous defects); Lan (Marfan syndrome); Lin (Spinal Muscular Atrophy); Yang (Nager syndrome); Yen (Crouzon syndrome); Kang (Osteogenesis Imperfecta); and Huang (Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia).
Due to her multiple disabilities, Yang has undergone various treatments since she was born. She is left with only one weak eye, but her resilient personality allows her to explore her potential and develop her strengths in every activity she participates in. Despite the facial deformity and multiple handicaps, Yen is nearly blind. However, accompanied by his father, Yen takes the diversified activities more earnestly. He has represented his school to Japan for many times to participate in the visually impaired Go tournament and achieved good results. Kang suffers from fracture frequently as a result of a rare disease, and he even became paralyzed in a car accident in his senior year in high school. However, he studied hard in the finance department in college. He not only obtained several financial licenses, but also signed up for volunteer services after finishing his studies. Huang is a patient with dysarthria, and his speech is not easily understood by others. He went all the way to his PhD and used his expertise to successfully develop an app that allows him to input text and let others see and hear what he wants to say through dual screens and Bluetooth speakers. His innovation has also benefited more patients in need. TFRD would like to congratulate the above award-winning patients on their outstanding performance.
